- 1967 – Dale Cooper returns from Simms' Hardware with batteries for his Norelco B2000 tape recorder, and reports on the Christmas gifts received by the neighbor children. Late at night, Cooper reports that he has tried to think of a life plan involving the tape recorder but has been unsuccessful.[1]
- 1975 – Cooper locates Ted, a member of the 24th Street Gang who broke his tape recorder when Dale was thirteen. He is stunned to learn that Ted spent seven years in prison for manslaughter, where he was raped and beaten, and has only recently been released.[1]
