Twin Peaks role Edit
Gidley was familiar with Twin Peaks, as she had been best friends with Sherilyn Fenn from the age of eighteen. She was cast in Fire Walk with Me by David Lynch, who insisted that she play the role in spite of her having booked a role in the movie The Crew (co-starring Ray Wise and Grace Zabriskie), which shot in the Bahamas. Lynch arranged to pay for any insurance costs for the other film's budget and she flew back and forth from Washington to film both projects. Of the film's cast, Gidley loved working with Wise, Sheryl Lee, and Kiefer Sutherland, but declined to name another co-star whom she regarded as an "asshole."
Gidley fondly recalled Lynch personally photographing her wearing the ring outside a library in West Hollywood before filming began. For the scenes in the Deer Meadow morgue, Lynch also designed her makeup, using a set of "bricks" to set her jaw in a particular shape. While filming the Red Diamond City Motel scenes, Gidley recalled that her wool costume made it uncomfortably hot, leading her to beg assistant director Deepak Nayar for a fan. However, Nayar replied that it would not be possible, as Lynch was averse to "moving air."
Gidley started working as a model from the age of eight after seeing a television ad for a Boston talent agency. As her career took off, she studied acting at the New York Academy of Dramatic Art under actress and acting teacher Stella Adler. She eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in acting after a successful screen test with Dino de Laurentiis.
Gidley made her acting debut in the 1986 film Thrashin', opposite Sherilyn Fenn. She appeared in several films of the 1980s and 90s, including Dudes, Permanent Record, The Blue Iguana, and played the title role in the cult sci-fi classic Cherry 2000. In television, she played the recurring role of Brigitte Parker in The Pretender (1997-99, with Lenny Von Dohlen) and appeared as Teri Mills in the first three seasons of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Gidley starred as Audrey Westin in the short-lived Fox series Strange Luck (opposite Rick Aiello). Her final screen appearance was a guest role in The Closer (2006).
From 2005 to 2008, Gidley was married to martial arts actor James Lew.
