philip and MIKE Edit

I know that it is difficult to know who is in control every time but should we not distinguish MIKE from the One-Armed Man? Like we do with Leland and BOB?

On a side note, I know that everyone writes Mike and Bob with upper cases but I never could find why. Could someone explain that?RingoRoadagain (talk) 10:43, October 29, 2016 (UTC)

I have considered separating the articles before, but each time, I've come to the conclusion that we don't really know much about Gerard, and MIKE only ever appears in the form of Gerard, whereas BOB has been seen in the form of Leland, the long-haired man, and Cooper's doppelganger.
As for the capitalization, this is because Laura capitalizes BOB in her diary, and while it's never explicitly done for MIKE, it helps differentiate him from Mike Nelson. MrBelpitsLegs (talk) 15:24, October 29, 2016 (UTC)

Capitalization Edit

This has been bothering me for a little while and I was kinda clueless when this was last discussed – is MIKE ever used in any official capacity? Or is this just a fan invention to differentiate him from Mike Nelson that's managed to stick? BOB is definitely a thing per Laura's diary, but I don't recall ever seeing MIKE used anywhere. I'm pretty sure Mike is used in subtitles, but I'm not sure where else it can be seen in text. Special Agent Dale Cooper (talk) 23:11, August 15, 2018 (UTC)

I don't remember this name outside of fan circle.Which is not a bad thing if we put the speculative name disclaimer at the top of the page IMO.RingoRoadagain (talk) 16:15, August 16, 2018 (UTC)
It would probably be a better idea just to change it to Mike if MIKE can't be verified. Special Agent Dale Cooper (talk) 23:27, August 16, 2018 (UTC)
Alternatively, we could use Philip (Michael) Gerard / the One Armed Man (would have to check which spellings are the most used) since that's how he's credited and since we don't distinguish the two characters in the page.RingoRoadagain (talk) 15:25, August 17, 2018 (UTC)
Using that credited name would be a bit counter-productive, imo. Especially since the new series simply credits him as Phillip Gerard. We do have a section that deals specifically with Gerard, so we arguably could split the article, but that's a whole other conversation. My concern right now is Mike vs. MIKE. Then, I believe it should be "Mike". We should probably make a note explaining that "MIKE" is just an unofficial fan name to prevent people trying to change it back to the upper case writing.RingoRoadagain (talk) 10:04, August 18, 2018 (UTC)
I'll change it all over to Mike once AutoWikiBrowser is working again so it doesn't have to be done manually... unless a compelling reason to leave it comes along. Special Agent Dale Cooper (talk) 00:24, August 20, 2018 (UTC)
