    I learned about "Stick Indians" as a child from Native Americans living in Eastern Oregon (Paloose and Umatilla). They were scary creatures of the woods, prairies, and mountains that could kill you, kidnap you and take victims to their spirit-lodges, and generally, make life in the wild difficult. The Native Americans did not like to talk about them at all, and would not speak of them in their native languages -- only English -- for fear the creatures would be summoned. I later discovered that a number of tribes in the West believed in "little people" who were very similar to the Stick Indians.
